Rosa Parks Essay Introduction Example For Students
Rosa Parks Essay Introduction Racism and prejudice have been dominant issues in the United States for many years. Being such a major issue is society, racism is also a major theme in one of the best pieces of American Literature, To Kill A Mockingbird. People, particularly African Americans, have been denied basic human rights such as getting a fair trial, eating in a certain restaurant, or sitting in certain seats of public buses. However, in 1955 a woman named Rosa Parks took a stand, or more correctly took a seat, on a public bus in Montgomery, Alabama. She refused to give her seat to a white man and was arrested for not doing so. The reasons and consequences and the significance of her stand are comparable in many ways to Atticus Finchs stand in To Kill A Mockingbird. Rosa Parks worked for the equality of all people. She was elected secretary of the Montgomery branch of the National Advancement of Colored People, unsuccessfully attempted to vote many times to prove her point of discrimination, and had numerou s encounters with bus drivers who discriminated against blacks. She was weary of the discrimination she faced due to the Jim Crow laws, which were laws were intended to prohibit blackAmericans from mixing with white Americans (Jim Crow Laws1). Also, due to the Jim Crow laws, blacks were required to give their seats to white passengers if there were no more empty seats. This is exactly what happened on December 1, 1955. On her way home from work, Rosa Parks refused to give her seat to a white man and was shortly arrested (National Womens Hall of Fame1). Even though she knew what the consequences were for refusing to leave her seat, she decided to take a stand against a wrong that was the norm in society. She knew that she would be arrested, yet she decided that she would try to make a change. Although her arrest would seem like she lost her battle, what followed would be her victory. Rosa Parkss stand was so significant that she is called the mother of the civil rights movement (Nati onal Womens Hall of Fame1). Her arrest served as a catalyst for a massive boycott for public busses. Led by Martin Luther King, for 381 days, African Americans carpooled, walked, or found other ways of transportation. Despite the harassment everyone involved in the movement faced, the boycott continued and was extremely successful. The bus company suffered from the loss of fares, but did not desegregate its busses. In 1965, the case was brought to court, and segregation of busses was ruled unconstitutional, the busses were officially desegregated on December 21, 1956 (Microsoft Corporation1) . The movement Rosa Parks started climaxed with the Civil Rights act of 1964 and the Voting Rights act of 1965. She received many tributes and awards, such as the NAACPs Spingarn Medal in 1970 and the Martin Luther King Jr. Award in 1980( Microsoft Corporation1). Rosa Parkss stand is significant to our society because she showed us that one person can help so many other people by standing up fo r what they believe in. Rosa Parkss stand is not very different from Atticus Finchs stand in To Kill A Mockingbird. Their reasons for taking a stand are generally the same, they wanted to help their societies. Both knew they would face criticism and harassment, yet they still tried to make a change. Although the times were different and they were two different people, they both tried to change a backwards society. Instead of people being equal in the land of the free, some people were considered more superior than others. However, when they tried, both succeeded. Maybe Rosa Parkss stand got results more quickly, but Atticuss stand laid the foundation for change. They also had courage for taking their stands. Atticuss definition of courage is to know you wont win before you start, but still start and still try ( ). Even though in the long run they both win, the direct consequences are negative. Rosa Parks still got arrested and Atticus Finch still lost his case; they both lost before they started. Lastly, both are considered heroes in their societies. The reasons, consequences, and significance of Parks stand are similar in many ways to Atticus Finchs stand. For instance Rosa Parks wanted to change the way her society thought and acted, as did Atticus Finch. Parks and Finch knew they would face many negative consequences if they took their stands, but they still did. Both stands held extreme significance in their societies. They both took stands that most people would not have had enough courage to take. Lastly, both are considered great leaders. .uffe2dc6988744cc4d5db9d6838e2c9a3 , .uffe2dc6988744cc4d5db9d6838e2c9a3 .postImageUrl , .uffe2dc6988744cc4d5db9d6838e2c9a3 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uffe2dc6988744cc4d5db9d6838e2c9a3 , .uffe2dc6988744cc4d5db9d6838e2c9a3:hover , .uffe2dc6988744cc4d5db9d6838e2c9a3:visited , .uffe2dc6988744cc4d5db9d6838e2c9a3:active { border:0!important; } .uffe2dc6988744cc4d5db9d6838e2c9a3 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uffe2dc6988744cc4d5db9d6838e2c9a3 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uffe2dc6988744cc4d5db9d6838e2c9a3:active , .uffe2dc6988744cc4d5db9d6838e2c9a3:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uffe2dc6988744cc4d5db9d6838e2c9a3 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uffe2dc6988744cc4d5db9d6838e2c9a3 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uffe2dc6988744cc4d5db9d6838e2c9a3 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uffe2dc6988744cc4d5db9d6838e2c9a3 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uffe2dc6988744cc4d5db9d6838e2c9a3:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uffe2dc6988744cc4d5db9d6838e2c9a3 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uffe2dc6988744cc4d5db9d6838e2c9a3 .uffe2dc6988744cc4d5db9d6838e2c9a3-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uffe2dc6988744cc4d5db9d6838e2c9a3:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Strategic Marketing - Case O F Sa Sa Essay

Wired Hands - A Brief Look At Robotics Essays - Robot,
Wired Hands - A Brief Look at Robotics NEWSCIENCE Two years ago, the Chrysler corporation completely gutted its Windsor, Ontario, car assembly plant and within six weeks had installed an entirely new factory inside the building. It was a marvel of engineering. When it came time to go to work, a whole new work force marched onto the assembly line. There on opening day was a crew of 150 industrial robots. Industrial robots don't look anything like the androids from sci-fi books and movies. They don't act like the evil Daleks or a fusspot C-3P0. If anything, the industrial robots toiling on the Chrysler line resemble elegant swans or baby brontosauruses with their fat, squat bodies, long arched necks and small heads. An industrial robot is essentially a long manipulator arm that holds tools such as welding guns or motorized screwdrivers or grippers for picking up objects. The robots working at Chrysler and in numerous other modern factories are extremely adept at performing highly specialized tasks - one robot may spray paint car parts while another does spots welds while another pours radioactive chemicals. Robots are ideal workers: they never get bored and they work around the clock. What's even more important, they're flexible. By altering its programming you can instruct a robot to take on different tasks. This is largely what sets robots apart from other machines; try as you might you can't make your washing machine do the dishes. Although some critics complain that robots are stealing much-needed jobs away from people, so far they've been given only the dreariest, dirtiest, most soul- destroying work. The word robot is Slav in origin and is related to the words for work and worker. Robots first appeared in a play, Rossum's Universal Robots, written in 1920 by the Czech playwright, Karel Capek. The play tells of an engineer who designs man-like machines that have no human weakness and become immensely popular. However, when the robots are used for war they rebel against their human masters. Though industrial robots do dull, dehumanizing work, they are nevertheless a delight to watch as they crane their long necks, swivel their heads and poke about the area where they work. They satisfy "that vague longing to see the human body reflected in a machine, to see a living function translated into mechanical parts", as one writer has said. Just as much fun are the numerous "personal" robots now on the market, the most popular of which is HERO, manufactured by Heathkit. Looking like a plastic step-stool on wheels, HERO can lift objects with its one clawed arm and utter computer-synthesized speech. There's Hubot, too, which comes with a television screen face, flashing lights and a computer keyboard that pulls out from its stomach. Hubot moves at a pace of 30 cm per second and can function as a burglar alarm and a wake up service. Several years ago, the swank department store Neiman-Marcus sold a robot pet, named Wires. When you boil all the feathers out of the hype, HERO, Hubot, Wires et. al. are really just super toys. You may dream of living like a slothful sultan surrounded by a coterie of metal maids, but any further automation in your home will instead include things like lights that switch on automatically when the natural light dims or carpets with permanent suction systems built into them. One of the earliest attempts at a robot design was a machine, nicknamed Shakey by its inventor because it was so wobbly on its feet. Today, poor Shakey is a rusting pile of metal sitting in the corner of a California laboratory. Robot engineers have since realized that the greater challenge is not in putting together the nuts and bolts, but rather in devising the lists of instructions - the "software - that tell robots what to do". Software has indeed become increasingly sophisticated year by year. The Canadian weather service now employs a program called METEO which translates weather reports from English to French. There are computer programs that diagnose medical ailments and locate valuable ore deposits. Still other computer programs play and win at chess, checkers and go. As a results, robots are undoubtedly getting "smarter". The Diffracto company in Windsor is one of the world's leading designers and makers of machine vision. A robot outfitted with Diffracto "eyes" can find a part, distinguish it from another part and even examine it for flaws. Diffracto is now working on a tomato sorter which examines colour, looking for no-red - i.e. unripe - tomatoes as they roll past its TV camera eye. When an unripe tomato is spotted, a computer directs a robot arm to pick out the

The Relationship between Regulation and Market Structures and How Regulation Affects the Market
The Relationship between Regulation and Market Structures and How Regulation Affects the Market With a long history of bilateral and multilateral trade, policies and trade liberalization, negotiations of creating independent market environments have been a major issue of discussion in the recent past.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The Relationship between Regulation and Market Structures and How Regulation Affects the Market specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Free market entails allowing markets rule themselves by allowing the free flow of goods and services, but in the past the government has had to regulate the market either by introducing trade tariffs, which seek to protect the internal industries or other tools which seek to set the market in order to guide the economy in an acceptable manner. Economic or industrial regulation can be described as the interference of the market by the government. Governmentââ¬â¢s aim of interfering with the market is to influence the behaviors of firms or even individual s in the private sector engaging in the provision of goods and services. These regulations are aimed at protecting the public from exploitation. Several tools exist through which the market regulation takes place and they include: price controls, taxes, interests and quotas thus regulations are used to improve the efficiency to which the society is allocated resources and alter income distribution in order to achieve certain goals. Industrial regulation affects oligopolies in such a way that for example with an oligopolist mutually aware his action will trigger reactions from others, tend to have stronger incentives to substitute anti competitive with cooperation for vigorous competition thus what may follow is a coordinated interaction. This causes the intervention by the government to regulate chances of cartel formations and thus the operations of oligopolies are interfered with as they cannot raise the prices as they would wish. The government allows them only to raise prices to levels which are socially acceptable. Another market structure affected is the operation of a monopoly. This is due to the fact that industrial regulation controls the market power by allowing free competition, market stabilization, and expansion of investments. This in return introduces more market players, several buyers and several sellers and operation of monopolies becomes curtailed.Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? It is simply concerned with the protection of the society against over exploitation, for example: production methods, the product attribute such as its quality, information disclosure for instance on the usage and includes the government rule on environmental protection, healthy, and f airness among the market players. It promotes what is deemed or has been assessed and declared as socially desirable. Social regulation affects both the private and public entities. The government ensures that what the private sector provides in the market is suitable for the public both in terms of quality and quantity. Thus social regulation protects the consumers, workers and environment from deceptive acts of the private sector. By introducing commissions such as the Environment Policy Act, the government ensures that the activities of the private sector do not threaten or overlook the safety regulations of the public as a whole. Through this, the public sector is not cheated, duped or exploited by the private sector. Social regulation differs from industrial regulation in that it is usually applied across the board too many or all industries and usually affects many people since it involves the government regulating all the details of production thus everybody involved in the p roduction process has to comply. The private sector argues that social regulation is not economical as most of the times marginal costs exceeds marginal benefits leading to over regulation. This causes most of the private entities to change their production processes for example by adopting new technologies that support the required guidelines thus causing disposal of assets before their period. A natural monopoly is a firm producing a single homogenous product which other industry would like to produce but cannot due to cases of government protection or the capital required for such venture is not affordable or even the importance of the product to the society thus it might be deemed unsafe allowing everybody to provide the service.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The Relationship between Regulation and Market Structures and How Regulation Affects the Market specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Natural monopolies are u sually established as a result of government special interests as they enhance efficiency by encouraging innovations. Costs of production, which make one producer more efficient than the other, can also force the establishment of a natural monopoly due to the expected high returns of scale. As a matter of fact, high market concentration does not always guarantee the absence of competition; sometimes it can reflect the success of a firm. In the production theory, sometimes monopolies can be favored by their better chances of exploiting the economy of scales reaching market equilibrium faster by producing more goods or services at a relatively low cost than it would be in a competitive market. Since these firms make profits at an abnormal rate, this may lead to adoption of advance technologies in the long run which can aid at producing quality products for consumers at a reduced price. Monopolies often exist in provision of basic services, for example, in the water industry where exis tence of several firms would result in multiplication of water pipes which would be costly to both the public and the private sector and thus most of the times the government gives natural monopolies to certain government affiliated companies to provide the services (Joskow, 2005). Premised on the fact that free trade benefits the economy, the antitrust laws of the USA seeks to prevent the anti competitive business behaviors which could be displayed by some of the major firms. The Sherman Anti-Trust Act of 1890 was the first antitrust law, which has since then undergone amendments with the most well known being the ââ¬Å"Clayton Act of 1914 and the Robinson-Patman Act of 1936.Congress also created a regulatory agency to administrate and enforce the law, under the Federal Trade Commission Act of 1914â⬠( Hartman, 1997: Par 3) The four major pieces that the antitrust laws seeks to control areAdvertising Looking for essay on business economics? The act authorized the Federal Government to dissolve trusts and established penalties for the persons convicted for establishing such combinations. The Clayton act which also falls under the antitrust laws seeks to address specific practices where the effect may interfere with free and perfect competition. This act covers practices such as creation of mergers and acquisitions which may lead to a creation of a monopoly. The act prohibits exclusive sales contracts, local price cutting to freeze other market players. The only secluded sectors are the labor unions and agricultural cooperatives from these co mbinations that restraint trade. Robinson- Patman Act is another antitrust legislation which seeks to deal with discriminatory prices in the market charged to competitors. The purpose of this act is to protect small businesses by controlling the ability of large firms to engage in large discriminatory discounts due to their huge purchasing power. This law specifically bans the charging of different prices to different buyers. The act seeks to help the small buyers who might be disadvantaged when it comes to competition with the larger firms. The Federal Trade commission Act is the last piece of antitrust law and this act seeks to disallow the use of unfair and deceptive practices under this act, behavior which might not be illegal under the other said acts may however be unlawful under the FTC act. The Federal Trade Commission simply enhances consumer confidence by enforcing the federal laws which seek to protect consumers. It also ensures that consumers are well equipped with free information which can help them in exercising their rights and spots to avoid deception. The US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission which is served with the function of ensuring compliance in line with the laws, regulations and any existing tariffs that exist in USA. The next commission is the Postal Regulatory Commission which advises the government on the legislations that need to be enacted with matters concerning market products and the expected consumer price index cap. Another commission is the Federal Communications Commission which has the jurisdiction over radio, telephone communication and television the commission is served with the function of regulating the monopolistic nature of firms search as the American Telephone and Telegraph Company. The other commission, Securities and Exchange Commission interprets federal security laws, issues new rules and amends the existing ones while also overseeing the inspection of securities firms, brokers and investment advisers among others and finally the US Federal Nuclear Commission whose main function is to protect the people of USA from nuclear compounds by ensuring the safety of nuclear production and other civilian uses of nuclear substances. With the increased attention towards civil rights, environmental concerns and consumer issues, there has been establishment of regulatory agencies which are: The Equal employment Opportunity Commission which is served with administering of civil rights, the commission coordinates the federal efforts at affirmative action for the employment of minority races and women. It enforces law against discrimination and investigates discrimination complaints against race, gender, age and religion. The second regulatory commission is the Environment Protection Agency which is charged with the responsibility of ensuring that industries adhere to the set rules which ensure that there is limited water and air pollution and also the disposition of hazardous wastes by companies is checked by this commission. It does this through by writing and enforcing rules as directed by the congress. The Occupation Safety and Healthy Review Commission is another regulatory commission charged with the role of developing regulations at work place. It is supposed to conduct inspections at work place and ensure that the working standards under which workers are exposed to are conducive. It ensures employees work under environment free of toxic compounds. The Consumer Product Safety Commission ensures that safety standards on potentially lethal and dangerous items such as hand tools and lawn mowers, flammable products, children toys are enforced by the industry players involved any unreasonable injury which may result from using such items is checked by this commission. Finally we have the Federal Election Commission which is an independent regulatory conducted in the US. The commission regulates election financing since its main function is to disclose the source of money use d during election campaigns. They do this through enforcing the provisions of the law such as the limits and oversee the funding of presidential elections Reference List Hartman, S. (1997). The Southern Ocean Is the Fifth and Newest World Ocean
The Southern Ocean Is the Fifth and Newest World Ocean In 2000, the International Hydrographic Organization created the fifth and newest world ocean - the Southern Ocean - from the southern portions of the Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean. The new Southern Ocean completely surrounds Antarctica.ââ¬â¹ The Southern Ocean extends from the coast of Antarctica north to 60 degrees south latitude. The Southern Ocean is now the fourth largest of the worlds five oceans (after the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Indian Ocean, but larger than the Arctic Ocean). Are There Really Five Oceans? For some time, those in geographic circles have debated whether there are four or five oceans on Earth. Some consider the Arctic, Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific to be the worlds four oceans. Now, those that side with the number five can add the fifth new ocean and call it the Southern Ocean or the Antarctic Ocean, thanks to the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO). The IHO Makes a Decision The IHO, theà International Hydrographic Organization, has attempted to settle that debate through a 2000 publication that declared, named, and demarcated the Southern Ocean. The IHO published the third edition of Limits of Oceans and Seas (S-23), the global authority on the names and locations of seas and oceans, in 2000. The third edition in 2000 established the existence of the Southern Ocean as the fifth world ocean. There are 68 member countries of the IHO and membership is limited to non-landlocked countries. Twenty-eight countries responded to the IHOs request for recommendations on what to do about the Southern Ocean. All responding members except Argentina agreed that the ocean surrounding Antarctica should be created and given a single name. Eighteen of the 28 responding countries preferred calling the ocean the Southern Ocean over the alternative name Antarctic Ocean, so the former is the one that was selected. Where Is the Fifth Ocean? The Southern Ocean consists of the ocean surrounding Antarctica across all degrees of longitude and up to a northern boundary at 60à ° South latitude (which is also the limit of the United Nations Antarctic Treaty). Half of the responding countries supported 60à ° South while only seven preferred 50à ° South as the oceans northern limit. The IHO decided that, even with a mere 50% support for 60à °, since 60à °S does not run through land (50à °S does pass through South America) that 60à °S should be the northern limit of the newly demarcated ocean. Why the Need for a New Southern Ocean? A great deal of oceanographic research in recent years has been concerned with ocean circulations, first because of How Big Is the Southern Ocean? At approximately 20.3 million square kilometers (7.8 million square miles) and about twice the size of the U.S.A., the new ocean is the worlds fourth largest (following the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian, but larger than the Arctic Ocean). The Southern Oceans lowest point is 7,235 meters (23,737 feet) below sea level in the South Sandwich Trench. The sea temperature of the Southern Ocean varies from -2à °C to 10à °C (28à °F to 50à °F). Its home to the worlds largest ocean current, the Antarctic Circumpolar Current that moves east and transports 100 times the flow of all the worlds rivers. Despite the demarcation of this new ocean, its likely that the debate over the number of oceans will continue nonetheless. After all, there is but one world ocean as all five (or four) oceans on our planet are connected.
